Dustbin Protocol

Dustbin Protocol

The following rules apply regarding your Bin usage:

  • Take your Bin out from your yard and place it at your garden gate (at your Bin Bay) on Wednesday mornings.
  • The garden services will collect the bin and take it out for collection by PikiUp (COJ).
  • PikitUp (COJ) empties the refuse bins on Thursdays between 06:00 and 18:00.
  • The garden services staff will wash and return your bin (to your Bin Bay) either on the Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.
  • Once returned, take your bin back into your yard.
  • NEVER keep the bin standing outside at the bin bay – always move it into your yard – else other people may fill it up with their refuse…
  • Use refuse bin liners or wrap all wet contents before you dispose of them into the bin.
  • Empty liquids from all containers before disposing of them.
  • Do not dispose of hot ash in the bin.
  • LOST, STOLEN or DAMAGED refuse bins must be reported to PikitUp by the owner.
    – It is the owner’s responsibility to handle lost, stolen or damaged refuse bins as the bin is covered via the owner’s personal COJ Property Rates account.
    – Contact Joburg Connect on 0860 56 28 74, (011) 375-5555 or Pikitup’s call centre on 087 357 1068 between 08h00 and 16h30 from Monday to Friday.

  • Replacement of dustbins by Joburg is often processed smoothly.
    Owners cannot delay replacements indefinitely.
Broken bins are unsightly and cause operational issues when handling the bins. They are unhygienic and smelly. Residents with broken bins also tend to dump their refuse in their neighbours’ bins, which is unacceptable. Leaving bags and boxes on the side of the lane is also unacceptable.

As an alternative to the replacement by Joburg owners can also consider to have bins repaired or replaced by private companies. See the Tokara Bin Maintenance page

As part of the February 2016 Road Repairs, the Trustees have added “Bin Bays” at the entrance to the houses on the side of the road.

A Bin Bay is an additional piece of paving that was laid to temporarily place your bin on the days that it needs to be collected.

The idea of Bin Bays was conceived to avoid the bins killing the grass.

Always store the bin in your yard.
